We are grateful to Professor Vera Fortunati, Bologna, curator of the authoritative Fontana exhibition of 1998, for identifying the artist and the dating of this painting to circa 1595/1600 (personal communication of July 2010). Lavinia was the daughter of the painter, Prospero Fontana and was painted by him. She was one of the first renowned female artists producing portraits and historical compositions.
